this is what Seth Godin already said in 2004. in 2004!!! Back then, when I was still learning the word 'royalties' and 'term' and he stated music was supposed to be free (already was free). The majors refused. Mr. Godin didn't throw up a strict answer and seeks solutions in the Business to Consumer side.
Free music depends on Business to Business relations. The consumer must no longer generate the cash flow, it must be the basis on which the CASH FLOWS.
Music can be free as long as record companies start 'dealing' in music as Sports club owners deal with their product in the Business to Business side. There is a stage, there a people willing to participate (raised their hands - 'permission based marketing' - read the book by Seth Godin) and can be targeted with even more specific commercials then when visiting a sports stadium.
